چکیده

Statistical Analysis A total of 488,653 km of shoreline in Kamishak Bay, AK was surveyed for Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) spawning events from fixed-wing aircraft in years 1978 – 2001, with the exception of 1982 and 1997. Every survey followed the same route. Although multiple surveys occurred in each year, the survey frequency was largely a function of weather, perceived size of the spawning cohort, pilot availability and budget. The minimum and maximum number of repeated surveys within a year were 2 and 12, respectively. When split into ~50 m segments (described in Appendix I), this resulted in a total of 9,316 shoreline segments that were surveyed multiple times each year. All surveys within a year were conducted between April 20 th and June 4 th .

Forage fish and near - shore habitat associations

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasi) has been identified as a critical species for North Pacific marine ecosystems and historically has been a commercially important species. In order to improve understanding of this key species, datasets which describe herring spawn activities were integrated with known habitat information and analyzed to determine which habitat has been critical for herring survi...

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Restoration Project Final Report Investigation of Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) Stock Structure in Alaska Using Otolith Microchemistry and Heart Tissue Fatty Acid Composition Restoration Project 070769 Final Report

Understanding the structure of Alaska’s Pacific herring stocks is relevant to how these exploited populations should be assessed and managed. We evaluated the capability of heart tissue fatty acid profiles and otolith microchemistry to identify the stock of origin for herring sampled from fourteen spawning aggregations associated with seven putative herring stocks throughout Alaska (e.g., Sitka...

An Indigenous Model of a Contested Pacific Herring Fishery in Sitka, Alaska

This paper uses GIS and spatiotemporal analysis of a historically and culturally modified marine ecosystem to evaluate Pacific herring abundance, declines, vulnerabilities, and future prospects, about which a Native Tribe and state fisheries managers disagree. In 2008, the Sitka Tribe of Alaska (STA) requested that an area within its traditional waters be closed to commercial sac roe fishing to...

Epizootiology of viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus in Pacific herring from the spawn-on-kelp fishery in Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA.

Both the prevalence and tissue titer of viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) increased in Pacific herring Clupea pallasi following their introduction into net pens (pounds) used in the closed pound spawn-on-kelp (SOK) fishery in Prince William Sound, Alaska. VHSV was also found in water samples from inside and outside the SOK pounds after herring had been confined for several days; however...

Seasonal Dynamics of Atlantic Herring (Clupea harengus L.) Populations Spawning in the Vicinity of Marginal Habitats

Gillnet sampling and analyses of otolith shape, vertebral count and growth indicated the presence of three putative Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus L.) populations mixing together over the spawning season February-June inside and outside an inland brackish water lake (Landvikvannet) in southern Norway. Peak spawning of oceanic Norwegian spring spawners and coastal Skagerrak spring spawners oc...
